The Equal Rights Amendment is the law of the land.

Thanks to the tireless work of the activists in Virginia, the Equal Rights Amendment was fully ratified in January 2020.

But people cannot exercise rights they do not know they have.

So what can you do?

  1. DECLARE VICTORY! There is a 28th amendment that enshrines gender equality in the constitution. This is the most significant development in our constitutional history since the 14th Amendment: it’s time to radically reimagine our nation with foundational gender equality.

  2. SPREAD THE WORD. Our film catches people up on 101 years of history in 85 minutes. You can share the film on PBS (app and YouTube) starting October 20th or host a community screening in your church, school, library, basement - anywhere you like!

  3. GET INVOLVED. We have provided actions to take and organizations to follow below.

ACTIONS + ORGS

Are you an activist?

Join the FEMINIST GENERATION, an org for young people of all genders who want to center gender equality in their advocacy work. Or VOTE EQUALITY that advocates for voting with a gender justice lens.

Do you love policy?

Join + follow the ERA Project at NYU Law - they helped author the state Equal Rights Amendment of New York that passed in fall of 2024. Or the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls - even if you’re not in California they publish essential research and advocate for critical policies that lead the nation.

Do you have resources?

Contribute to the ongoing Impact Campaign for RATIFIED, to help us bring this film to all 50 states (we’ve made it to about half!). Make your tax deductible donation here.

Do you prefer state-level advocacy?

Some of the most durable current protections are still found in State Constitutions. Find out if your state has an Equal Rights Amendment in the constitution and what it covers at this great resource from the Brennan Center for Justice.

Examples of amazing state-level gender justice organizations:

Adding the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution is a call for radical, intersectional systems change.

The ERA is about adding new rights and also about pushing back against government overreach. It changes laws, but to truly adopt the amendment requires change to entire systems, cultural norms and behaviors. There are many ways to get involved!

Do you need talking points?

  1. Article 5 of the US Constitution lays out the Amendment process. It has two components: The Amendment Bill must pass out of the House and Senate, and is then sent to the States for Ratification. 3/4ths of States (38 states) must ratify the Amendment.

  2. The ERA has passed both of these hurdles. On March 22, 1972 the Senate comfirmed the ERA and sent it to the states. On January 15th, 2020, Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, making it the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution.

  3. Opponents will point to a deadline on ratification, but there is no provision in Article 5 of the Constitution on ratification deadlines. Per the letter of the US Constitution, the Equal Rights Amendment is the Law of the Land.
